You, too, can be a hero

The World Triathlon is definitely not only about the elite races. It also caters for serious age-group athletes, weekend warriors, gym bunnies and families.

Whether you take your triathlon quite seriously or have never even done a triathlon before, there is an option for you.

On Saturday 26 April at 08h30 the Age-Group Olympic distance race is taking place. This consists of a 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run.

If that sounds a little ambitious then the Sprint distance race on the Sunday is the race for you. 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. This is the perfect race for beginner and novice triathletes and can be completed in 1h15 to 2h15.

I think that these distances should be well within the capabilities of someone who does more than 5/6 hours of exercise per week and should be a nice challenge.

You can even round up some family members or colleagues and form a team.

In another of the World Triathlon events, the one held in Hamburg, Germany, over 10 000 age-group athletes compete. That is how popular the race is. In its first year, Cape Town certainly won’t be that big, but that is the goal over the next 3 years. You’ll definitely want to be able to say that you competed in the first World Triathlon Cape Town.

And, please do not be put off by the seemingly large entry fee. I can assure you that the race will be worth every cent as it is hosted by the International Triathlon Union. You will have full road closure in the heart of Cape Town while you race on the same course that the elites race. I can guarantee you that should you not enter due to the entry fee you will bitterly regret your decision as you watch your friends run down the blue-carpeted finish chute.

The V&A Waterfront promises an awesome vibe over the weekend and participating and spectating is going to make for an unforgettable two days. The sense of achievement available to those who cross the finish line is immeasurable.

Go on, I challenge you 🙂
